Outcomes of acute appendicitis in patients younger than age 4: a descriptive study

Abstract Background Acute appendicitis is an infrequent pathology in children under 4 years of age, and its diagnosis a clinical challenge that can lead to late detection. The intention this study describe the surgical findings explore factors outcomes associated with appendiceal perforation patients age histologically confirmed acute appendicitis. Cross-sectional historical data on pathologic Clinical, surgical, pathological variables were described. relationship between presence was explored using odds ratios (OR) 95% confidence intervals. Results Seventy-five found 2013 2019. Seventy-four cases presented pain palpation, 56 (75%) signs peritoneal irritation, 70 (93%) sepsis admission emergency room. Perforation increased hospital days ( OR = 2.54 [1.60−4.03]), antibiotics 4.40 [2.09−9.25]), intensive care 9.65 [1.18−78.57]). Conclusions Abdominal reported parents, abdominal criteria room are common features. complicated leads high morbidity due longer antibiotic treatment, hospitalization days, PICU, postoperative ileus.
